What a nice setup! The only point I dislike is the camera holder that will prevent to use the optical viewfinder, for moderate magnification it's still very useful. I am trying out some "polarizing gel" filters..... Just one polarizer will be useful only in some cases, the parts of the subject that...

Impressive design ! I like the CAMERA ! You mentioned polarizing filters (not shown) - how are you using them ? Thanks, Saul I am trying out some "polarizing gel" filters, to be used in front of the lights, rather than the standard "polarizing filter on the lens". It seems (for me now) to be a "tri...

About the camera macro focus (RSS Macro Focuser). (Really Right Stuff) I could do better here. This macro focusing slider has some problems.... For precise detail work, it becomes loose and floppy between the time you loosen the knob, adjust, and re-tighten. It does this even worse when mounted vert...

About the top 360 rotational specimen stage....versus the bottom 360 stage....
Are both necessary ?

...they rotate for different reasons.
If your specimen is centered axially, the top one adds an additional complex axis.
There may be a name for it, I don't know.

The LED panels.... I bought blank circuit boards** , and soldered (many  ) individual (5600k) LEDs to them, then epoxied the boards to aluminum heatsinks (they barely get hot).....and created ways to mount them to small adjustable ball heads. Giottos makes some good ball heads for about $17 a...

My macro rig, beginner, 1:1 lens

I have spent some time gathering this setup, mostly Really Right Stuff, and eBay parts gathering (US local), only 2 parts from Asia. (no China) At the moment, I am only photographing around 1:1 (lens: Tokina 100 f2.8, camera: nik 7100) Soon, I'll get closer magnification (bellows, etc.) PICS.... I t...

I've gathered a lot of information on LED dimming power supplies, from browsing some of the many aquarium forums on the net. They often build their own LED lighting fixtures, and tweak them to no end (fish and coral nerds). There, you will find some real-world usage of various dimming techniques, an...

Think about the big picture..... Moving the focus ring does change the depth-of-field and other attributes, in that the internal lens elements change while doing-so. Moving the subject often changes the lighting (by a small amount, depends). Moving the camera body, changes none of either. (ok, it do...

I'm not clear.....are you worried about heat in the lamp itself, or heat gathered on the thing (subject) you are photographing ? During continuous lighting, both are an issue, and can be quite separate issues. Both can be avoided by reducing light energy (intensity)....up to the point just before ta...

Not ideal, and if you can't find another solution, you could epoxy glue-on some knobs that are slightly over-sized. It doesn't matter if they are not centered absolutely, after gluing.....you're just turning them.. This would be a last resort though. Or...if you know the shaft diameter, completely f...

At my workplace, we often use a 3M product called "Scotch-Weld" urethane adhesive. It's a two-part product, and comes in manageable dual cartridges applied with their hand-held squeeze gun, with replaceable mixing tips. 3 minutes (or so) working time. (it hardens fast) We tried butt-joining two 1/8 ...

Plastic Shield over LEDs ??

I have made some flat LED lights, in a grid pattern and mounted to a heatsink.....about 4x8 inches size. I use these like mini-panel lights. I want to put a screw-mounted plastic shield over the (5700K) LED's, to protect them, and to give me a surface to place my choice of temporary vellum-type pape...

I might add.....that if you do exposures long enough, you can actually "paint with light" by moving the light during an open shutter.

Yes, lighting surely depends on your wants and needs (goals). Entomologists may require overall diffuse light. Bendable "goose-neck" light mounts do work well for "positioning", but sometimes extra length is needed. I can imagine that in some situations a length limitation might lead some to conclud...
