Re: Upgrading from Canon 70D (lens is MP-E 65mm)

Just an update. I chose the 80D and am happy with it. Thanks for all the advice.

Re: Upgrading from Canon 70D (lens is MP-E 65mm)

I have both bodies now and am comparing them. One quick question. If I increase magnification from 1X to 1.6X, I lose .6 stops of light, correct? (all else being equal, of course)

Thanks for the mirror lockup/shutter delay comments, Chris.

Re: Upgrading from Canon 70D (lens is MP-E 65mm)

One other advantage of mirrorless which could be relevant for macro, is the absence of mirror slap. Not having to worry about mirror lockup is a blessing. I didn't know what mirror lockup was till I read your post and looked it up. I hadn't thought about the mirror slap causing vibration, but it ma...

Re: Upgrading from Canon 70D (lens is MP-E 65mm)

I find live view with a flip up viewfinder to be indispensable for macro. And live view comes automatically with a mirrorless. Your 70D had it. Did you use it? Thanks for the additional thoughts. By "flip up viewfinder" I assume you mean Live View with an articulating LCD screen. Basically, I've us...

Re: Upgrading from Canon 70D (lens is MP-E 65mm)

Why'd you get another dslr instead of mirrorless? I think I assumed a mirrorless camera would be outside my budget, which is around $600. I'll look and see. I still have a few days to return the 80D if I want. I'm already considering returning the 80D and getting a full-frame. If I had a full-frame...

Upgrading from Canon 70D (lens is MP-E 65mm)

I hope this is the right forum for this question. I use a Canon 70D and MP-E 65mm. The camera needs repairs, so I'm thinking of getting another one instead. If I do, it will probably be either an 80D, a 5DMK2, or a 6D. One question I have is, will working distance be different with a full-frame came...

Amazing pics. Love the last one, which is a leafhopper, by the way.

@Chris, yes, the field of view is about 8-9 mm.

@Rik, thanks for the info and advice. It is helpful.

Thanks, Chris. I really appreciate all the feedback. It will take me some time to digest it, but in the meantime, I wanted to let you know that the photos are indeed crops. Here is the uncropped photo (but still sharpened and color-tuned). http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/4739_IMG_2734_...

Another Encyrtid wasp

I'm back to my SX10is, with the DCR-250 and DCR-150 stacked on top of each other, but this time I tried Manual mode instead of Program mode. This is at f/5.6 and 1/500. Feedback is welcome.Image

Thanks, Chris. I appreciate the comments about both of my posts. I agree that the recent photos' depth of field is too shallow, but I do like their higher resolution compared to my previous photos. I haven't actually bought the Rebel, MP-e and flash; I rented them for the weekend to try them out. Th...

Seeking critique (Encyrtid wasp)

Given this camera and lens, how does the depth of field look? Thanks in advance for any comments. First post (four Chalcidoid wasps)

This is my first post here. I'd like to improve my images. [Edit: My question is, basically, am I getting all I can out of my Canon SX10IS and Raynox DCR-250 and DCR-150? If not, what can I do differently? Or if these images are as good as I can hope for with this equipment, and assuming I can't aff...
