Re: Lens protection for afocal imaging?
No, but I only make setups that are meant to be permanent so it isn't a possibility. Some degree of jank is inherent with something that will be mounted and unmounted frequently though so it might be a good idea in this case. Just check to make sure it doesn't affect image quality. Oh for sure. I u...

Lens protection for afocal imaging?
Just curious if anyone uses any kind of lens protection when doing afocal imaging? Obviously, because the camera lens is such a short distance away from the microscope's eyepiece (usually just a few mm) there is always that small chance of the front glass element of the lens bumping the eyepiece. In...

Avoiding physical contact with the 40x objective
I was using my compound microscope today and there were times when it looked like my 40x objective was making physical contact with the cover slip. While viewing through the eyepiece, I could see the image shift when focusing and moving the stage. I was using fine focus of course. Is there any way t...

Re: Two afocal photomicrography setups (now three)
A very nice afocal setup. And compact too. That's interesting that you're using an Olympus lens with a Canon EF adapter. I know that with the EF mount, there is a considerable distance between the lens and the focal plane which makes it rather challenging to adapt lenses successfully. A lot of the o...

Re: Two afocal photomicrography setups (now three)
I admit I'm rather envious of these afocal trinocular setups. I just have to make do with a modest monocular scope. Pau, I'm intrigued by the empty M49x0.75 filter ring. Could you explain how it prevents the camera lens from hitting the eyepiece? I would have thought that the eyepiece would be a sma...

Re: Having trouble uploading avatar
Thank you for the instructions. I'm a Photoshop user and don't have much experience with Gimp. i have Photoshop CS4 but unfortunately, 'Save to Web' is not one of the Export options. I may have downloaded Gimp in the past. I'll have to check.

Having trouble uploading avatar
I'm trying to upload an image of mine as an avatar and I'm having no success at all. I note the requirements state that images can't be more than 80 x 80 pixels and 6 KiB. I haven't heard the term 'KiB' before (I assume that's referring to 'KB.') I resized my image down to 80 x 80 pixels at 72dpi an...

Re: Query about preparation of slide for salt crystals
Overnight? That's a long period of time. Since I'll be shooting time lapse through the microscope, I might try and leave the slide out on an outdoor table on a sunny day to speed up the evaporation. I would like to start shooting just as the water begins to evaporate and allow the camera to keep run...

Re: Query about preparation of slide for salt crystals
Thank you for the tips. I have seen some awesome imagery of crystals from you in the gallery here. Really great work. At first, I was thinking of leaving the slides out on an outdoor table in the backyard but I'll put them on a window sill like you suggest. Roughly how long do you reckon it will tak...

Fair point! I think a cheetah running under my scope would feel equally stressed / traumatised.iconoclastica wrote: ↑Sun Dec 20, 2020 2:09 pmWhich is nothing, compared to how that falcon would feel.Lou, a Peregrine falcon flying under my microscope would probably give me quite a shock!

Re: Vorticella - fastest moving organism?
I'm not sure if the shorter distance of travel has anything to do with Vorticella appearing to move faster than a cheetah when in actual fact, it is not faster. Don't forget, you are looking at it under high magnification. Oh yea that thought made more sense to me after I made my last post. A Pereg...

Query about preparation of slide for salt crystals
I have noted that some people use salt solutions in water and allow that to evaporate on a slide. I'm hoping to do the same with samples of sea water as I live close to the beach. Hopefully, I can get some interesting crystal formations appearing under my microscope which I plan to shoot in time lap...

Another speedy creature worth mentioning is the mantis shrimp. Apparently, it's strike is equivalent to a low caliber bullet and can even smash glass.
