Fossil Diatoms from Newport Beach

Hello everyone. The Newport Beach deposit has a good diversity of specimens and the occasional rarity. The Glyphodiscus stellatus was a nice find and something I had never seen. It was imaged in BF and Hoffman Modulation. HMC does not work well with most diatoms. In this case it reveals surface deta...

David One of the freaky things is that this is exactly how it appeared in the eye pieces. The image required no rotation whatsoever. It also did not show up very well with a dark medium phase objective. It had to be a dark low low. I just happened to have the DLL in the nose piece. It also kind of l...

Arachnoidiscus oamaruensis

This looks like a basic garden variety Arachnoidiscus. It's in excellent condition although it's obstructed by a bit of debris in a spot or two. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/435_Arachnoidiscus_oamaruensis_SchmidtA_BrownNE_1933_BL_40x_APO_1.jpg Upon closer inspection it appears to b...

Great images! Is the dark field a dedicated condenser or DIY? Quite a carapace on that tank of a creature. It must be a tough guy in its own realm.

Coscinodiscus ovicentrum

This is a new find for me. Reviewing old slides always brings up new things.

Hi Peter Thanks for the excellent ID! After studying Oamaru slides for almost a decade, this is the first time one of these turniped, err...turned ip, turned up! http://www.radiolaria.org/image.htm?sp_id=613&division=27 has some examples of the O'Conner plates you may have been referring to. ...

Bizarre Diatom? (solved)

Well this is an odd one. It's shaped like an Amoeba test. Since it was found in a fossil deposit from Oamaru, it's doubtful that it is. I have never seen a test survive the rigors of fossilization or the acid bath used to clean the diatomite. It would have to be siliceous meaning a radiolarian or di...

Good luck, René
That's for sure. I changed the name to S. comis. The advice came from a very reliable source.

Thanks

Thank you Jacek and Cactusdave. René, I agree with your ID. It is a relatively flat specimen. I changed the name. Sometimes finding an ID only takes a few minutes and other times it takes hours of searching. It's good to get it right though. Thank you very much. The image below is another I have bee...
