Playing with a cheap microscope

Bought a cheap microscope but with full size objectives etc (SWIFT Microscope SW150 £68 on offer). Managed to attach a camera body using a telescope mount plus some pipe lagging and then used a couple of LED lamps to illuminate the subjects whilst I took some focus stacks just using the fine focus k...

Great pictures! If anyone is interested, lace bugs are very common and are seen on the undersides of leaves of various deciduous tress in my experience. They can also turn up in great numbers if you use a sweep net in a field. They are small, but that is not a challenge here. Thanks for the comment...

Very nice. But I am confused. Does the seladerma create a gall on ovipositing on the plant? Or is it a parasitoid of the fly? What's the life cycle? The fly lays it's egg in the flower, the fly larva starts eating the developing seeds in the seed pod then the chalcid wasp Seladerma lays it's egg in...

The end of a saga

A story that started in 2008 with a shot of a mating bundle of chalcid wasps and ended this year with a shot of the wasp ovipositing into an aquilegia seed pod. Brian V. A rare opportunity with a beautiful model

Spotted this fairly large ruby tailed wasp (about 9.7mm body length) on some wood in the neighbour's garden. It seemed to be more interested in having a clean than in what I was doing which is fairly unusual for these wasps. 5dmk2/MPE-65/430Ex flash. All shots focus stacked using zerene. Brian V. ht...
