Thanks everyone for their replies. I don't have any sticks out here, except what the tides and wind drive up on the rocks :) The more 'pelagic' wood often shows up with barnacles and other critters living on them... hope to have a series prepared of that before too long. Yes, I'm on the B.C. Coast, ...

A Lichen, an Anemone, and a marine invert ID inquiry

Hello all, Things are going splendidly here on my little island, getting behind in my post-processing though. There are worse things to complain about :) Lichens Xanthoria candelaria (crusty yellow) and Lecanora sp. (spp?): http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3193/3279400333_cdc76cfc75.jpg Anthopleura el...

Betty you know you're elephant seals :) In 2002 I had the pleasure of talking with Prince Andrew, Duke of York about many things, and he will attest that the worst smell he's ever experienced was the breath of a Southern Elephant Seal! Luckily there wasn't much wind, so I didn't take the brunt of th...

Hi Aynia, I have some scenic shots I'll post links to soon... I live on an ecological reserve so I'm afforded with many opportunities to get close to these critters. The whisker and fur shots of a harbour seal what was napping about 4m from me, I was behind some rock outcroppings, so he was none the...

Thanks everyone, yes loud and clear Regi! I am truly fortunate to have all of this on my doorstep. My 'boss' called this morning and said "the light looks good out there today, enjoy taking pictures!" Awesome :)

Both elephant seals left last night, but I heard one bellow, so he isn't too far away.

Ha ha P_T, trying to give yet another good reason not to dive alone?! I don't believe there are any confirmed sightings, the water may be warm enough 5-14 degrees surface temperatures throughout the year... but that niche is already filled by our transient orcas. There is some grainy footage of orca...

Good question about the pupils Rik, I'll do a comparison when I get a chance! I specified because I have a couple of elephant seals coming and going from my front yard this time of year. This guy has been a real pain, pretty aggressive compared to the mellow adult bull!

Rik, you're not the first person to ask that :) It's the eye of a sub-adult elephant seal, and I believe the pupil is practically non-existent (just a little pucker of iris). The far left is a Canadian flag, right below that is me in my red wind-breaker and navy pants.

Seal close-ups

Beautiful day here on my island, the seals were dozing so soundly in the sun that I was able to get a little closer than usual: Curly Whiskers: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3314/3207765007_709a11c1ed.jpg Not boots or gloves yet: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3393/3207765345_dff3fe4bb8.jpg There's...

Thanks Ken! I don't have a scope out here, though I could propose that for the next budget :) They definitely caught my eye though.
