Re: Sony A7Rii USB Tethering

When I was setting up an A7RM4 for use with the Stackshot tethered I was concerned about having to get into one of these clever hacks, but I had the universal IR release available with the Stackshot, and it works fine, not the cheapest way but certainly the laziest.

Re: Monochrome Camera / Techniques?

Ray, 1) Helicon Focus can use Adobe Raw as its processing engine; Adobe Raw of course supports numerous DNG formats from cameras/phones. I don't have a license, trying to stay loyal to Rik and in my comparisons during a recent trial of Helicon I saw no reason to buy their license, so I can't test th...

Re: Monochrome Camera / Techniques?

Ray, as to your concern about converting DNG to TIFF, these merged pixel-shifted DNGs are not like everyday, garden-variety Bayer DNGs: they have full color information at each pixel, and do not require demosiacking. They are very much like TIFFs except that the color information is not transformed ...

Re: Monochrome Camera / Techniques?

Steve, most cameras do not export four shifted RAWs, so that was why I didn't think that is what you meant. I think Sony may be the only one; you mentioned Pentax but the K-1 (which I have) does the combining in-camera, like Olympus and Panasonic and all others that I can think of. None of these al...

Re: Monochrome Camera / Techniques?

Steve, I am not sure what you are doing. Are you just shifting a single whole image by one pixel in each direction? In a real 4-image pixel-shift, the sensor is shifted so that each pixel gets a genuine measurement of each color (twice for green) of a pixel-sized point on the subject. The combining...

Re: Monochrome Camera / Techniques?

Ray, you had expressed concern about pixel-shift processing software oversharpening. I was sure that Iliah Borg's PixelShift2DNG (still a free beta) would not, but, pennies being a readily available subject, I tried it. An A7RM4 was mounted on a Wild M400 with a ringlight, so that's what I used. Wit...

Re: Monochrome Camera / Techniques?

I've had a full-spectrum monochrome conversion of a Sony A7RM3 for a couple of years, conversion done by Monochrome Imaging and with Astronomik band-pass filters behind the lens. I've used it pictorially with IR-pass filters, with visible-light filters and with the latter supplemented with old-fashi...

Re: Infinity objective and tube lens dissolute chatter

I should have mentioned I was referring to full frame. Trying a 70-300mm is a good idea, will get around to it sometime.

Infinity objective and tube lens dissolute chatter

Thread hijacking has passed from crime wave to pandemic, and we have quite enough of pandemics (or perhaps perceived pandemics) right now, thank you very much. I started this thread to answer a speculation by Macro_Cosmos about the use of 100-400mm lenses as tube lenses. He mentioned Sigma and Sony,...

Re: Sony A7R with microscope lens

I mistakenly thought Mitutoyo was responsible for the M38-thread-on-one-end design. My bad. I now see it's Nikon and Thorlabs microscopes that have that design.

Re: Sony A7R with microscope lens

About edge/corner definition: it would be helpful if people reporting on that would always indicate whether the observation was with a single image, typically an IC, or alternatively a stack of images, typically of a three-dimensional object. Edges can be degraded by curvature of field, which is gen...

Re: Sony A7R with microscope lens

When you order from ThorLabs they put a box of junk food in with the order. It's almost worthwhile to not get the order exactly right, to forget some gimcrack or other, so you have to reorder and get more junk food.

Re: Sony A7R with microscope lens

Don't sweat it too much. The following is US$11, and I've been using two of them for a few weeks on the A7RM4. https://www.ebay.com/itm/264635012993 I did have an expensive Commlite smart adapter that was too long, and actually modified it. But the electronics were hopeless, so wasted effort. Buy a ...

Re: How to increase the performance of Lightroom?

My RAFs run 85-90MB, the TIFFs 770MB.
