Adding a telecentric lens, say a Nikon MM one, and stepping in the Z-axis wouldn't be that difficult.

Thanks, Steve. A G-claron is a fine lens, and they're relatively inexpensive. They do have an f/9 maximum aperture, though, and so when you take bellows extension into account, the ground glass can get pretty dark in the macro range.
