Fly stereos

Several weeks ago I found a tiny 2.5mm fly at a local forest preserve (Northern Illinois). It was a pretty yellow color so I took it home for some studio work. Some sort of fruit fly I think. 2023-08-04-16.27.38-ZS-PMax-webjpg.jpg 2023-08-04-16.06.04-ZS-PMax_web.jpg Then yesterday I photographed a l...

Male dolichopod fly

I continue to enjoy watching and photographing Long-legged flies. Recently I saw an interesting doli on my hosta and collected it for examination. The eyes and male genitalia make interesting subjects for sterio constructions using Zerene Stacker.

Re: wing of the true bug

Excellent work here. Beautiful images! As a retired engineer that did lots of fluid mechanics analysis on aircraft lube systems I am amazed at the “boundary layer treatments” that Mother Nature bestows on bugs. Most small insect wings operate in the laminar flow regime. The wings beat furiously gene...

Re: Just An Observation

Fungus infection theory is likely I think. Photos should tell the story.

Take a look at this YouTube video on fungus infected flies.

Rik commented… As you had made the post, the images displayed twice: once inline using [img] tags that referenced the attachments, and separately in the Attachments area at end because there were no inline [attachment] tags. I have edited your post as admin to fix this problem. I cannot recommend th...

Zombie Fly

Earlier this summer I was inspecting my garden's asparagus patch to see if the asparagus beetles had arrived. Happily, a moderate infestation so far. But there were numerous files. The flies were clinging to the ends of the asparagus fronds. Their wings were outstretched. They did not look damaged a...

Re: Male mosquito sensors

Great photos! I have not observed the less bushy tips found on your male fly’s antenna. This is quite interesting. The second reference mentions the amplification in signal obtained by some mosquitoes that inject a phantom tone into the signal path. I am reminded of the BFO (beat frequency oscillato...

Re: perspective on O-ring (images added)

Back in the day I was involved in many o-ring failure investigations on aircraft hydraulic and engine lube oil systems. For a sprinkler valve with only one year of service it looks pretty degraded. More than you would expect in a room temperature water system. I suspect the rubber may have been cont...

Re: How to control a LED panel with a Stackshot Controller

I mentioned using the hotshoe to trigger my LED light pulse. I made a simple DIY connector to interface with the hot shoe pad. This link describes the connector.

DIY Hotshoe interface

I needed to detect that the shutter had opened to trigger a pulse of LED illumination for my stacking rig. The hotshoe contacts were designed to trigger a flash and would suit my purpose. I constructed a simple hot shoe connector from an old credit card. The folded sandwich slides into the hotshoe b...

Re: How to control a LED panel with a Stackshot Controller

This is a link on Amazon to the programmable relay module I used. The price has dropped by a few dollars since I last purchased one. I purchased several and also use them as intervalometers in time lapse and to regulate watering of terrariums. https://www.amazon.com/UCTRONICS-Programmable-Multifunct...

Re: How to control a LED panel with a Stackshot Controller

I currently use pulsed LED lighting that switches on during the exposure window. With my rig the shutter is open ~3 seconds. The LED light comes on about 125msec after the shutter opens and is timed to stay on for two seconds, The light then switches off. The shutter closes with the light off. My ca...

Re: Beard Grindings

I did some Googling on hair structure. The best reference I discovered was this link to an article on forensic hair examination by the FBI https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/about-us/lab/forensic-science-communications/fsc/april2009/review/2009_04_review02.htm Buried within is an interesting discussi...
