Re: Diatom imaged with 313nm light

Well done! Quite dramatic to see the resolution improving.
BTW, are you able to make an image with a normal 100x oil immersion objective? I expect that to give a better image than such a specialized UV objective in the normal light region.

Best wishes, René

Re: Diatom imaged with 313nm light

I'm not at all convinced by this report, typical tunnelvision of a couple of material scientists. But indeed Lou, instead of using a high refractive mountant to create contrast (which doesn't work in UV in any case), you can use water and still be able to generate (absorbance) contrast. As usual for...

Nice effect! Is this lens really delaminated, or just loss of coating?

Wow indeed, let me know if they come up for sale :-)
The one that shows the chloroplast structure is a nice touch.

Re: "Mystery" antique coloured filters perhaps for microscopy?

Got a box with filters pretty much like yours, marked Wratten M filters, Kodak etc, Kingsway, London. From the closure of a photographic division within an english horticultural centre. No markings on the filters, but with some written details in the box. The centre was setup in the early 1900's. Ho...

Re: Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) -- a drying aid

Nice collection of links, thanks Rik. The actual number for the surface tension given for HMDS is higher than I expected. Other factors might indeed be involved in explaining the working as a drying agent. HMDS is used a lot in electronics, eg https://www.biolinscientific.com/blog/wetting-in-electro...

Re: My Vanox AH journey (was: Olympus BH-NIC DIC with Nikon CF long-barrel optics?)

Sounds great Victor!
My most used lens is a 25x/0.6 Leitz SW with the 40xdic prism, and as you find it is not perfect. But by lowering the condenser slightly (and opening the field iris more), I find it performs satisfactory.

A LED lamp, but check what excitation wavelength you want to use.

Re: Monochromatic Microscopes?

since corrections only occur in the objectives. Eh, no, the condenser plays a part too. Anyway, who's the buyer for whom you claim this benefit? The professional market has no problem with the price of the supercorrected optics available nowadays. I don't see any interest from the amateur side for ...

Re: 60x Frankenobjectiv identification

Actually found a link to a HPLC detector using Olympus 40x objectives in Geissler ea (2016) Microchip HPLC separations monitored simultaneously by coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering and fluorescence detection. (can be reached via booksc.org). No mention of phase contrast or apodization however. R...

Re: 60x Frankenobjectiv identification

Interesting stuff. If this is coming out of a machine, it makes more sense that it is a dry lens instead of an immersion lens? I'm sure you have tried that, but you never know. Might be part of a micro UV fluorescent detector in chromatography, with a quench of the direct light. Must be a micro cel ...

Re: Leitz APO 8mm Apochromat 24X/0.65 Objective

Definitely a step up from a normal achromat! 37 mm parfocality though, so needs refocussing when mixed with modern 45 mm objectives. 170 vs 160 mm is not really an issue for objectives, but for the rest of the scope (particularly eyepieces). As scarodactyl says, it is no match for a more recent (pla...
