Re: Qioptiq d.fine HR 2.4/128 3.33x Lens Test is Online

Looks just like what I saw at the center. The 82mm "corner" had more improvement, and actually looked a bit sharper at f2.8 than at f2.4, which is why I chose f2.8 for my testing. This also shows why I was dissatisfied with the 105IXL3p5, since the diffraction limitation is already very noticeable a...

Re: Qioptiq d.fine HR 2.4/128 3.33x Lens Test is Online

Nice test results, and it's great to see performance of a lens that is so far only available to those with deep pockets, not to those of us who must buy surplus. I assume from the text that both lenses were shot wide open at f2.4. In my own testing of the RF3.5x, I found that f2.8 had improved sharp...

Highest Serial Number 105PN?

I see a new listing from a Japanese seller on eBay with a 105mm Printing-Nikkor having Serial Number 501281. This is the highest serial number I've seen yet for the 105PN, indicating there were at least 1281 of them made. Has anyone seen a higher number?

Still, 1281 is not a huge number.

Re: Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8S VR macro lens announced

My 105VR is the most disappointing lens I ever purchased. I bought it in 2009 for shooting coins, and it came highly recommended, so I figured it was a no-brainer. Unfortunately the IQ was so poor that it started me looking for something better almost immediately, and it has sat on my shelf unused a...

Re: Experience with lighting/diffusion using a single strobe?

Diffusion material for sure has an effect on the CRI. I use simple diffusers made of Opalux, which seems quite balanced spectrally. It might shift the hue a bit blue. I've had excellent luck so far with the 5W Quans lights. I don't know the CRI rating but they "seem" better than the Jansjos, and are...

Re: Experience with lighting/diffusion using a single strobe?

I've had great results by masking areas of my diffusers to "shape" the light and keep it from coming from clock positions and angles I don't want. This technique has been so effective that I can get nice, even lighting without significant highlight hotspots using a single Jansjo, and since your flas...

Re: Musou Black Flock Sheet

What happens if you test for reflection at shallow angles, typical for use as flocking? Here's how they look at about 10-deg from horizontal. Same conclusion I believe but perhaps they are closer in overall reflectivity numbers, though the Beetle Black seems to have more highlights and of a variety...

Re: Musou Black Flock Sheet

I received my Doodlebug Beetle Black sheets today and did some quick tests for use as a background. I also shot one of my Protostar backgrounds. I white balanced off the regular multitone true grey reference I usually use. I shot both the Beetle Black and Protostar at 2sec exposure using a partial r...

Re: Diffuser film - shiny or matt side towards light

Local reflections onto the subject were my first thought too Ray, and I always put the matt side to the subject based on that assumption (when there's a glossy side). Until I consciously tried it the other way around and noticed the extra diffusion (and loss of more light) with smooth side to the s...

Re: Diffuser film - shiny or matt side towards light

I always face the matte side of diffuser material toward the subject to minimize re-reflection. For the same reason I put masking on the subject side of the diffuser. I get a lot of re-reflection color shifts when using short FL objectives, and need to keep the light apertures and reflectivities to ...

The doodlebug sheets I got do have an adhesive back.
Are they the same ones sold by Hobby Lobby? There is no indication (that I can find) that the sheets linked by Rik have adhesive backing.

Re: Musou Black Flock Sheet

I mostly use Doodlebug Beetle Black cardstock, for the reasons described at https://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17917 , "Doodlebug cardstock is blacker than Protostar". That product still seems to be available at Hobby Lobby, https://www.hobbylobby.com/Scrapbook-Paper-Crafts/Pape...

Re: New Lens Tests in April

Nice report on the 95PNA. I have to admit I was a little bit on the edge of my seat waiting for it, as I have been using them for many years as my go-to lens for 2x, and was wondering if you'd see something different. In my much earlier testing at 2.4x, the 95PN (not A) did not beat the 35MP. I no l...
