As always, I am fascinated by the tests created by these amoeba species. A couple weeks ago I squeezed out some mosses that I had collected into a smaller container. Now I get a pretty good assortment of testate amoeba from the sediment in that container. Here are a few...

Hi,

I'm sure this is cell division, which is part of the answer to a question that Charles put the other day: how do testacea build their "houses"?

hello everybody,
not sure about cell division, I think it's "conjugaison" (I hope this french word is the same in English...)

division weakens the genetic structure of the cells , so after a moment...

the two Cyphoderia are melting there genetic material to begin a new cell wich will be regenerate.

you can see in an animation made by a friend of mine Jean Marie Cavanihac what's append on Mikroscopia, the french forum http://forum.mikroscopia.com/index.php?showtopic=1373&hl

best regards

Dominique

SO, this is two testate amoebas, joined together, and mixing genetic material to form a new individual? Does one amoeba have the new individual or do both have one? Sorry for all the questions Wink

Hi Dominique,

Conjugation is a form of mating in ciliates only, I've never ever read about Testacea performing anything else than cell division.
