SONYNUT,
The details in your initial post indicate, to my understanding, that you are using an EL-Nikkor 50/4 = 4-element, 3-group design as opposed the EL-Nikkor 50/2.8 = 6-element, 4-group design.
Reference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikkor#EL-Nikkor
Do you have a copy of the EL-Nikkor 50/2.8 to compare with the Industar 50-2 3.5/50 and a reverse-mounted EL-Nikkor 50/4?
Reverse mounting and reducing the extension may bring the EL-Nikkor to within its optimal range and result in a more complimentary outcome.
It would be good to compare notes. I have an Industar 50-2 3.5/50 and an EL-Nikkor 50/2.8, so I will take some images and upload the results.

The results from Sonynut are looking promising and I'm curious for the results of the comparison done by Craig.Craig Gerard wrote:...so I will take some images and upload the results.
I wonder if there are 50mm's that can outperform the El-Nikkors, given its price.
By the end of the week I receive both a Rodenstock Rodagon 50/2.8 and a Schneider Kreuznach Componon-S 50/2.8 and heard/hope they are slightly better than the El-Nikkors.
Anyone had any experience with these?

Thank you for this link, Enrico,
Unfortunally none of my mentioned lenses are apochromatically corrected.
The first picture of Sonynut's Industar 50-2 shows good contrast.
Is it coated?

Single image......more details, crop and a focus stack to follow. The Industar 50-2 3.5/50 @ f/4 is reverse-mounted.
Image has been resized for the web and mild USM of 40% applied.

*Additional Results: Industar 50-2 3.5/50 @ f/4 : Focus Stack. Zerene PMax.

* 100% Crop from focus stack. NR and mild USM applied.

I increased the magnification.
Here are two images for comparison with a EL-Nikkor 50/2.8 @ f/4
Industar 50-2 3.5/50 @ f/4, Single image.

To my untrained eye: Industar 50-2 looks a bit fuzzy , the El-Nikkor: better contrast and a lot sharper, also in the corners or is it the DOF?.
In Craighs tests the Industar seems no match for the El-Nikkor.
Thank you for these comparisons Sonynut and Graig Gerard.
I often find the El-Nikkor sharpest at F/5.6.
One more question, Craig, can you please add other parameters like type of camera and flash / exposure /shutterspeed, etc, and what specimen you used?
For these comparisons wing scales seems to be the reference.

Fred, not a problem. Thank you for the promptFred wrote:One more question, Craig, can you add other parameters like type of camera and flash / exposure /shutterspeed, etc, and what specimen you used?
The images I have posted over the course of the day were taken with a Canon 50D, Nikon PB-4 bellows and various adapters for reverse-mounting the lenses. The camera was tethered to a PC.
The images were taken using 'Live View', Silent Shoot enabled Mode 2 selected = EFSC single shot, shutter speed 1/15th, ISO 100.
The EL-Nikkor 2.8/50 is the earlier, Mr Zenji Wakimoto version.
An Olympus BHMJ focus block was used for incremental focal plane adjustments.
A Volpi Fiber Optic illuminator, with three light guides was pointed at a diffuser cylinder made from Rosco diffusion material.
