Sign of Spring

Post by Jbailey »

I found this growth on a dead Forthisia branch. It is quite soft and wiggly.

Apparently the recent week of 40F weather prompted it to grow. I can't wait for more signs of spring life!

Is this a fungus or a slime mold?

Jim

Hi Jbailey,

It is definitly a fungus, a Tremella species. They resemble a brain and prefer cold and damp weather. I can't help you with the American species.

Best regards,

Ferry

Thanks, Paul:

That's pretty descriptive. The common names are often more handy than the scientific ones.
