Homalozoon vermiculare, "chowin' down"

Post by Charles Krebs »

This is the first time I have come across this species. Took many photos and got a good series of it eating this critter (looked like some type of heliozoan). Here it is just about to swallow. The extrusomes around the mouth are very prominent on this haptorid ciliate.

40/0.95 Olympus S Plan Apo. Canon 350D. DIC illumination with electronic flash.

All three of your posts are awesome, as usual Charlie, but I really appreciate the link to your image galleries and articles. A great wealth of information there for those of us who say, "I wonder how he does all that?" :-k

Great capture Charles. Eating a heliozoan is like us eating a sea urchin with the spines :smt103
