More magnification than 1:1

Post by ironman_br »

Hi buds,

I have a Nikon D80 and D40 and a Sigma 70mm 2.8 Macro 1:1.

I'm want got more magnification and made some tests:

The 1th one is using a Pentax 28mm 2.8 reversed in forn of the macro lens. I got 2:1 but with severe vignetting:

Another test was using the 28mm reversed direct on camera body with a adapter:

With the setup above I got 2:1 with no vignetting, but I need use the flash power in manual mod, setting the power.

I'm thinking in try some options:

- Buy a 55-200mm to use with my Nikkor 50mm 1.8 reversed
- Buy a 2x teleconverter (Kenko 2x MC7 DG AF Teleplus)
- Buy a Macro filter +4
- Buy a cheap extension tube and use the 28mm/50mm reversed.

What the best option to be easy to shot and have good quality?

Tubes. If you use ones with auto diaphragm links your macro lens will work well, and you could get say x4 with the 28 reversed.

Tubes are the way to go. The less fiddling with optics the better... Tubes do not interfere with the optics thus giving the best results. To get 2X mag or more you need a fair length of tube depending on the focal length of your lens.

Well, if you do some searching on this site you'll be able to work it out  .
If you're reversing a lens you can use this cheap sort too

Read the ad
If you're reversing a lens you can't use any "functionality".

This magnification test is interesting.

I notice that the marks at the top of the picture are farther apart than the marks at the bottom of the picture.

Did you shoot this in the usual orientation, with the ruler slanting away from the camera so that the edge of the ruler is farther away?

If so, then this pair of lenses has "inverted" perspective that makes things farther away from the camera look bigger than things that are closer to the camera.

This surprising behavior is actually common with lens combos -- short lens reversed in front of a long lens. But it is not often shown so clearly.

Edited to add: See "Stopping down a lens combo" for explanation of the inverted perspective.

As far as I am aware Cyclops there are no extension tubes even using a lens unreversed that will give you full functionality with modern Nikon DSLR's. Nikon's own tubes will neither give you autofocus, since they consider this useless at very close range, or the distance information on "D" lenses since they have no electrical contacts at all.

Kenko tubes give you autofocus, but again not the distance information of "D" lenses. Autofocus too is only really useful when not too great a length of tubes are used at more normal distances. Also autofocus requires a certain amount of light to work, so with larger extensions and smaller apertures it may be unreliable due to the low light levels reaching the sensor.

Dave,I hardly ever use auto focus in my normal shots and certainly never when doing macro work! But what I meant was aperture control and viewfinder display, lens DOF preview etc.
