Afraid it is a fact of life that in some cases the parts are worth more than the whole, which is illogical but financially more rewarding.
A case in point is old books of maps which are much more valuable with the maps taken out and framed than as a complete book, at least until complete books become super rare and valuable. After all dealers are in business to make money, if they forget that they go bankrupt.
I remember years ago silver antiques were fetching more as scrap than antiques. At the moment due to the world financial situation beautiful gold jewelry, particularly Indian, seems to be being melted down by jewelers in the UK to produce ingots to sell as a safer investment than money in banks. Sort of a modern day equivalent of the Spaniards melting down Inca treasures to make bullion.
