Fading moth

Post by Jbailey »

This large moth--I.D. please-- was perched on a wall of a local park service building. The superintendant pointed it out to me. He said that it and a second one had been there for many hours.

I had to stand on tiptoes to get this one. They were likely mating earlier and are dying.

Imperial Moth, Eacles imperialis.

Impressive critters, aren't they? And a nice color match to that wall!

Thanks, Rik:

I could have moved this one to an easier spot for photography--the other one was some two feet further up--but I felt it would have intruded on the dignity of its final moments.

The moth certainly was colorful. I have only seen spectacular moths in the wild three times. One was a Cecropia just unfolding its wings. The other was a pair of mating Luna's.
