Beetle - id help

Post by Aynia »

There are several of these in the garden at the moment. I can't seem to find them in my books and while I've tried an online search, I can't seem to find it.

I've never seen them before.

Garden is in County Wicklow, near the coast and there are pine trees, grasses, a few flowers, sycamore, hawthorn etc - nothing much out of the ordinary.

Looks like a "Long Horned Beetle." Nice shot, a little red though. :D

Family Cerambycidae - Longhorned Beetles, Probably Subfamily Lepturinae - Flower Longhorns, maybe Genus Strangalia (I am going by USA Beetles  )

Almost correct. It "was" Strangalia formerly, but a lot of things have changed in the nomenclature of Cerambycidae - due to type studies and re-interpretation of old literature.

Now this species is named Leptura aurulenta.

Thank you guys.

Of the three or four I saw, one was very red (not the one pictured) but he hiding in green leaves, and others were a lot lighter and more orange.
