Bird's nest fungus

Post by Jbailey »

I first saw thes fungi in my yard. More recently, I have seen them elswhere--particularly where wood chip mulch has been placed.
The individual "nests" are about the diameter of a pencil eraser.Image

This is probably one of the best photos I have seen of these things in some while. I find them often too but for some reason I can never get shot as good as this. Nicely done! :D

Ken:

Thanks for the feedback! I used a Nikon macro flash for illumination. Frequently, I hold it off-camera to get extra detail, but this was an on-lens lit shot. The flash is not for TTL use on digital cameras so I set the exposure manually.

Yes that is a nice picture, and it shows them well. Looks like Cyathus striatus, which you probably know already.

Lovely shot. I have only seen this one once, some 35 years ago, in the pouring rain, with no camera available.
