Blue Tree Tarantula

Post by Carl_Constantine »

So, my girlfriend's father is a renowned Arachnologist and has a whack of spiders in his basement. I saw this beautiful spider and wanted to take a pic. I've never seen a Tarantula that wasn't black, brown, or red so this intrigued me quite a bit.

Image

It's a Arboreal (Tree-dwelling) Cyriopagopus "blue" female from Pahang, Malaysia. This isn't a true macro, but it is a closeup.

Interesting! Is the blue iridescent, by any chance?

nope, he really is that color from all angles. It's pretty cool. Sucker is fast too. they scurry like no tomorrow. This one was willing to cooperate and this is the best photo of the 8 or so I took of it. It's pretty much the only one that has it's legs spread so you can see the color better.

 I never knew they had "Blue" spiders (of any kind). Very beautiful.

A pedantic point: Although such colours are often called "blue" in reference to flowers, I would call it purple or violet. A splendid beast by any description.
