Another small fly portrait

Post by lauriek »

Smallish fly, metallic greenish blue body, loads of these about, spend all their time hopping from leaf to leaf, I suspect from the shape of the mouth they just suck stuff (honeydew?) up off of the leaves...

Thanks guys!

Just to follow up I think this is the same species or genus at least - been trawling through all my old pics to dig out a full body shot of one - hardly have ANY, these little buggers always fly off before I can get a good shot!! ;)

Any thoughts on ID?

Not a clue.

But I just have to comment on the quality of this photo by itself. What a wonderful combination of timing and focus! :D :smt023

Do I understand correctly that the little critter apparently assumes that crossed-leg posture immediately after takeoff?

Thanks Rik! :)

Yep he'd just taken off...

I have to be honest and admit this shot was pure luck, sometimes the TTL pre-flash scares bugs, I get quite a few shots with 1/2 out of focus bug disappearing out of the top of the frame - this time I was lucky enough that it moved parallel to my plane of focus! Could have done with another stop or two DOF ideally but hey! :)

Nice pictures - I think Dolichopodidae, but I wouldn't know genus or species.

Looking at the size of the legs, not least in proportion to the wings, it probably has to do all it can to reduce drag.

On the other hand, after drinking all that honeydew.... :D
