What is the hives opinion on white balance settings when using a Nikon attached to a microscope?

Usually I do a custom white balance on an empty part of the slide either before the shots or later during raw conversion.
Be aware that
- if you use halogen lamp the colour temperature do vary a lot with the power setting
- if you use LED illumination a custom white balance is even more important as the camera presets are not well equilibrated for most LED models spectra.
(No Nikon involved, but it's the same with any camera)
