Velvet ant (mutillidae)

Post by mjkzz »

It looks like an ant, runs like an ant, also looks like a bee, under 10x magnification, its legs resemble spider.

But it is a Velvet ant (not a real ant, but a family of wasp, multillidae).

Need to work on lighting

I have seen these in Florida. Do they sting if you mess with them?

I tend to be very cautious with specimens that have a "business end" on
them!

Thanks Pizzazz and Lou, I am always careful when catching them always follow "no contact" rule :D For this, I basically "let" it run into a small bottle.
