Hard as gnats

Post by Beatsy »

After a week of sub-zero temperatures culminating in -7C yesterday, a little bit of sunshine brought the temperature up to 8C today. Positively spring-like considering it's early Feb.

And out came the gnats too (including this unlucky one). Just a snap to see what sort of fly it was (inasmuch as a 200-image stack can be a snap). Tough little beggars! Do they hide away as flies, or (quickly) hatch out from pupae when it gets warmer?

FoV ~2mm shot with 20x Mitty.

Wow! You are rekindling my Mitty-lust! What are you using as a tube lens?

They emerge from their pupae when it warms up. Mate and die, most probably. Well, this one got to do 1 out of 2...
