Chips

HI Mike - would be nice if you would include some technical specs on how you are taking the photos. Are you using a Metallurgical microscope with epi-illumination? Which scope are you using? What objectives etc.

You may have mentioned these details below, but just curious - I am looking to refurbish a metallurgical microscope to try on some opaque specimens. I saw a video on Michael Davidson who photographed of chips - he found signatures, cartoons and graphics on some of them.

Cheers

Hi, Robert Berdan.

If you want to look at the labels and pictures on the chips, then go here -

Yes, I am using an Amscope metallurgical microscope that has an epi-illumination setup so that on occasion, I can do cross-polarized photography. The colors are some kind of weird magic. For one thing, I think the color engine in the ToupView software supporting the CMOS camera on the scope sucks. But, I am enjoying the colors it's coming up with. I also think that the process of decapsulating the chips with Nitric Acid may contribute to the colors.
When I was shooting chips for Motorola in Phoenix years ago, they always gave me depassivated chips.
