Daddy long legs spider

Post by Beatsy »

Nothing special, but a mini milestone for me. My first (deepish) handheld stack that came out half decent. Sony 90mm macro, 25 shots with flash. A smidge under 1:1 magnification. The inset is a 50% crop.

The subject was very accommodating though. It's been holding that pose for at least a week with only the occasional shifting of a leg. Patient critters! This was taken in the relative comfort and stillness of my bathroom too - so I'm sure my feeling of accomplishment will evaporate the moment I try to apply this in the field when the weather warms... :)

That might be a "Basement Spider." Very delicate.

Nice! We have a similar species, and yes they are hard to photograph with a single frame because they are so leggy.
As you know, females will hold their egg sac in their chelicerae. The silk is so transluscent that you can readily see the developing embryos inside the eggs. That would be interesting to see.
