Polarized Microscopy of Rock Thin Sections

Post by DougCraft »

Well, I spent some time resizing my microscope images, but they are still too large to post on this forum (!) - so I am posting a link to a video from my YouTube channel that shows thin sections with music I composed:

I worked in an agency that had petrographers who examined rock thin sections as part of their evaluation of the engineering properties of cores taken from prospective and existing dam abutments and foundations. My agency had a wonderful library of thin sections that had been prepared over a 50-year period, and I was able to use the polarizing scope to look though this archive and take lots of photographs (after hours, of course!). These were done using a Nikon Labophot-Pol and a Nikon D-70 with a Scopetronix eyepiece adapter, usually 20X to 40X.
