Backlit butterflies with flash

Post by tpe »

I kind of liked these, even though the subject matter was so ordinary. It was a bright sunny day, shooting into the sun with a fill flash. You could see the back light better with a lower flash setting but it lost some of the detail on the camera side, so the compromise left some of the translucency but also exposed the camera side. Hopefully not loosing the backlight.

Nice shots, just getting on with feeding.

Second shot shows poor fella has been in the wars, but all the more special
for the more naturalness of the capture.

Good results with useful technique hitting sweet spot. Just spotted five other insects in the second pic of ragged butterfly. Brave to display none pristine subject but just as valid - thanks.

Many thanks for the comments, much appreciated.

Andy 5? I could see three? I guess an aphid just behind the petal of the flower, some kind of true bug further to the right and a little down and a small fly on the flower at the bottom right of the frame, but will see if i can find the original to have a look at the non resized version for the rest :).

Excellent job balancing flash power and ambient.
