Loving the Zeiss Jena Semiplan 6.3x

Post by Yawns »

I finally got one last week.. for 56 € + 13€ shipping after scanning the eBay daily for more than a month ...

I was lucky.. mine seems to be brand new / never used.. the thread was virgin without marks of use... (maybe old stock)

I'm looking for the data sheet but without success .. downloaded a few Zeiss catalogues, one with more than 100 pages but no sign of Semiplans... :(

Also very happy for having now something between 4x - 10x.. no more having to elongate / shrinking magnifications to silly values ...

All picture at 6.3x 'ish

Hi there Yawns,
This is great macro, love the light and details.
Did you soak the specimen in some liquid before shooting?

This is great inspiration :D

Thanks for sharing ;)
Kind Regards

Hello Harald, thank you ...

I ty to capture / kill (freezer) / stack in short time
and I capture them in sterilised sample flasks I get at the chemist

the flasks also work great as protective domes to keep them free of dust or whatever for a couple of days.. it's best to work with fresh insects than to clean with ultrasounds or whatever ...

Very nice stacks. I certainly agree on capturing stacks ASAP after capture (or thawing) and I do the same now. Or I at least try to get one overall shot as quick as I can - just so I can learn what changes later. Soft parts can shrivel up and look completely different after only a few hours drying (e.g. foot pads, halteres and the like).

Sorry for my late reply.. it looks to be between 5-6 mm at rated magnification . (measured with a ruler)

Thank you ...
I can't understand german but I can't see any Semiplan objectives in that brochure...

The one I'm talking abut is
Carl Zeiss Jena Mikroskop Objektiv Semiplan 6,3/0,16
and has "Semiplan" engraved in the barrel .. there are around achromat and planachromat versions with the same nominal values 6.3x, 0.16 NA..

I thought Zeiss objectives of that vintage needed eyepiece correction...?

Thank you Beatsy..
yes you're right...
Some even start to discoulour right after death .. some pentatomidae and grasshoper are hopeless ... and draonflies are terrible. Te colour of the eyes simply goes away after death...

Sympethrum ... nice blue eyes, when alive.
Image

Dead.. the blue is gone
Image

Dolycooris... alive
Image

Dead.. looks like beaten with a baseball bat by the mafia ...
Image

Diplacodes ... in the nature look like black but in reality they are very deep blue / purple ..
I tried to be quick.. and in the rush I did not verify the focus peak.. so I miss like 10-15 shots in the center of the eye.. >>> trash bin.

Image

only 12 hours later when I realized the mistake done.. I got a portrait of Dark Vader.

6,3x Semiplan has nice coverage for APSC sensor.
At 6,3x has working distance around 8,5mm.
Semiplan works good for magnifation 5x-8x.
Doesnot need eyepiece corection.
And here my result with Semiplan 6,3x at 6,3x.

Has anyone tried any other CZJ versions (planachromat, achromat, planapo) of 6.3x 0.16 or 6.3x 0.20 ?

Thanks

Some time ago a then-active member used a Zeiss 6.3x 0.2. I recognized his demonstration picture when he sold it on ebay and asked him - he said it needed a lot of CA correction.
I don't have a Zeiss scope but I'm sure I've read that they needed correction prior to the ICS era, but can't find a reference now.
