Nice 3-dimensional feel to a beautiful flower (we call these Tiger Lillies). Thanks for your post!

Nice picture. I think that is actually not a tiger lily, Leonard, but rather an Alstroemeria, which used to be placed in the same family as the amaryllis, but is now in a separate family with the climbing genus Bomarea. Lilies have ovaries at the base of the pistil, above the ring of petals, while the Alstroemeriaceae have ovaries below the ring of petals.

The most interesting thing about these is the base of the leaves. The leaves are made "upside-down" compared to virtually all other plants: the stomata are on top (developmentally speaking; they are on the side of the leaf that faces the stem when developing in the bud) instead of under the leaf. The plant forces the stomata to face the ground by twisting the base of the leaf stem. Russell, you may want to take a look at that if you still have access to this plant. It is a unique structure. By comparing the gene activations of this plant with conventional plants, it should be possible to discover which genes control the differentiation of "upperside" and "underside" of a leaf (and possibly other plant structures).

Thanks, Lou, for the correction  and for the interesting sidebar on Alstroemeria !
