In the last picture, a strange white worm-like think seems to be coming out of the katydid. I wonder what on earth it can be. Is it a huge nematode parasite? It's so large in proportion to the katydid.

Good pictures, and Dave, good eyes!

Considering the host, I'm thinking Nematomorpha (horsehair worm). But it could also be a mermethid nematode. See the picture and ensuing discussion at http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... php?t=2762 . Interestingly, despite their similar appearance these two groups of worms are not closely related.

Interesting images, I find them disturbing but interesting. I suppose it is bad enough being host to a parasite but then being prey to a predator too? A day that would have been best spent inside behind locked doors.

That's my thought exactly, Ken. A whole lot of 'nope' in those pics. Kidding aside, the pics are phenomenal, Oleg. You captured some great moments there.
