Filinia photos

Post by Olympusman »

I was trying to get a specific species ID for a rotifer and went to Google to search "Filinia photos". Surprising.

Filinia is a genus of rotifers, although this kind of Google results doesn't surprise me any more

When I saw Olympusman's note, of course I could not resist asking Google about Filinia photos.

Given his expressed surprise, I figured that I was going to get a bunch of semi-porn photos of somebody named "Filinia".

But instead I got a bunch of pictures of rotifers, which of course matched what Olympusman said he was looking for.

So, what I'm curious about is whether a) Olympusman was surprised that Google actually gave him what he was looking for, or b) something else is going on.

The first, illustrated return in the Google search results I got, was Filipina photos. Archetypical, many being Stock images. Nothing shocking, though I didn't delve.

I wonder if perhaps your browser is doing some sort of auto-correct. My search results don't say anything about "Filipina".

Try it with quotes "Filinia photos"... I suppose this is the origin of Mike's surprise

That only gets 3 responses, clearly an indication that quotes were a bad idea, but still not very surprising (if you understand what quotes do):

I guess the reason I'm continuing to pursue this question is that I'm interested in the general issue of why the "same" query for two different people gives two very different results.

Is it a matter of search bubbles, or behind-the-scenes translation of one word into another, or visible but unrecognized differences between the queries, or ... ?

Yesterday in addition to rotifers got Asian brides. Did a virus sweep and voila no Asian brides.

And yet I'm clearly not getting Asian brides, and I've posted my screens so that you can see exactly what I typed into the search boxes.

Do you get Asian brides again today, or was that just a yesterday thing?

Pau and Rik got it. Using quotes, Google somehow mixed together "Filinia" and "Filipina." Computers - go figure.

With or without quotes, I didn't get any asian brides. I will keep trying.

Troels, I suspect the browsing history only affects the order of presentation of search results. When there are very few hits I think the results will be identical (except possibly for order) across users; I get the same three hits as Rik.
