I bought some lambda/20 front-silvered mirrors which could fold up the optical paths for these long lenses....but have not tried them yet.

Robert, Lou,

Yikes! That's a long extension for 5X. How much better IQ do you think this would be over a Mitty 5X, or if Mitty brought down to 4X or 3.4X?

Best,

Mike

I think the Mity would be sharper but the image circle of the PN150 at 5x would be HUGE. So the total information in the PN150's aerial image is much greater than that of the Mity. Capturing all that information would require massive stacking and stitching though.

PN150 at 5x lou would that be possible. I have the 150mm PN. I purchased one from a gentle man in Thailand. This lens is huge and very heavy. He is a great guy to deal with and very honest . I got caught up in a scam earlier this summer. I have noticed that some very high end lens are up for sale on ebay. what happens is they tie your money up for 60 to 90 days. So you have to be careful. yes you get your money back but it takes time. i would like to know. what the mounting thread size is electrical tape just dont cut it.

Rocky, sorry, I meant 4x, not 5x. The Makro-Varon goes to 5x.

Does your version have the magnification ring? If not, it is just for 1:1.

Note that the image circle of the 150PN is only 30mm at 1:1. There is a noticeable degradation in the corners at 1:1 on APS-C (30% at f2.8, 20% at f3.3 according to MarkG's tests). End result is that at 1:1 the 150PN is a bit sharper in the center, but not as sharp in the corners as the 105PN. For the many folks here shooting large format, the 150PN would likely not be useful at lower magnifications.

For centralized objects like flowers and especially when stacking, this won't effect the result much. It will have a visible effect on large flat objects which reach reach outside the frame for sure!

Turns out this lens my friend now got is an excellent one, despite a filter ring dent. The ability to optimise the lens to a certain magnification is great.

I am glad to hear that. I would have bought it if I had the money. I hope more of them come up. There was another a few weeks ago but it was being sold as part of a set of three PNs, and the total price was not that good.

I saw one offered in Russia a few weeks ago, at just $1400, but the seller wanted Western Union which is known to be unsafe, so I passed. Gone now unfortunately.
