Aphids

Post by WalterD »

Another insect that most people are generally not keen on is the aphid.
The ones in this post were found in a flower, I was able to make the pictures after putting them to "sleep" by placing the flower in the fumes of nailpolish remover for a while.
All again made with the Leitz Orthoplan/Ultropak setup as follows
1 4x
2 6,5x rear view
3 22x close up of head
4 and 5 11x different subspecies (?) of aphid
6 22x close up of mouth parts
Note: in image 4 it appears an antenna is missing. Actually it did not, however to reduce the depth of field of the entire stack, this was omitted.
Did not get a clue about the two "antennas" on their backside (picture 2); if anybody knows please share with us.
