Insect egg...?

If it is, it is quite small. With a good many of my macro critters beginning the long sleep until next spring, I now turn to my scopes for subjects to ponder. Scanning over a section of a Southern Strap Lichen, I came across this tiny and unusual looking egg, attached to one of the spikes that are so commonly associated these particular lichens.
