Inside dandelion, Camellia buds (added stereo)

Post by Charles Krebs »

I plucked a dandelion flower bud and a camellia flower bud (both not yet open) just outside my front door yesterday. Looked "inside" and took a few pictures.

This last one is a the inside of an open Lamium purpureum ("Purple Deadnettle", "Purple Archangel") blossom. This is an invasive species here but widely established in the USA. I found the internal geometry intriguing under the stereo scope, but a 2D image looked pretty dull. So here is the cross-eyed stereo that much better represents what I liked inside this flower.

Very beautiful! Thank you for sharing!

I especially like photos #4 and #6. What on sensor magnification were those made with?

Charlie,

Incredible quality images !
The details are amazing. The first one is my favourite.

What objectives have you used ?
How do you get the details without the halos after stacking ? I use Helicon Focus (older version) and get the halos when I use higher magnification objectives and the stack is deep. It very confuses me.

Fan and Marek...

4, 5, and 6 were with a 4X objective Olympus 4/0.13 Plan Fluorite (directly onto an APS-C sensor).

The first dandelion was a 5X and the second either the 5X or 10X. Both Olympus MPLFLN (M type, plan fluorite)

The third image (first camellia shot) was a no-name infinity Chinese 2/0.05 ($28.50 delivered!) Not great but not terrible. It is useful for scouting subjects and occasionally taking a picture or two.

I use both Zerene and Helicon. Method "C" in Helicon and Pmax in Zerene are very similar in the end result. The other methods do differ, and Zerene has better retouching capabilities. These shots are low magnifications so typically there will be far less "halo" problems than at higher magnifications.

Very nice. The stereo is amazing, excellent depth with my Pocket 3Dvu, almost like I can reach inside that puppy. So what objective is the stereo image. Olympus UPLFLN 4X Objective?

I read the text, and I looked at one side of the stereo pair, and I thought "Yep, pretty dull."

Then I locked up the stereo, and a big grin lit up my face. :)

Lovely! Most appreciated!

Acquiring a stereo viewer and a copy of StereoPhoto Maker is pretty reliable. Aspirin works for some, experience helps for others.

Absolutely stunning Charles!

I assume you used EPI illumination?

Thanks for sharing, it is a great inspiration to produce better images!
