Nikon MDC-A Relay Lens - any useful?

Post by Ichthyophthirius »

Hi,

I've got a Nikon MDC-A Relay Lens for Coolpix like this one: http://www.truetex.com/micad39.jpg

It was originally used to connect a Coolpix camera to a c-mount photoport on a microscope.

I'm wondering if it would be useful for any other adaptation. Does anyone know technical details of this lens? Like magnification factor, focal length, field number or image distance?

Optically, I suppose it is an eyepice. It takes the microscope intermediate image, projects it at infinity and the Coolpix camera objective work as an afocal adaptation?

Kind regards, Ichty

Sure, at least the second part must be true (I ignore if the intended microscope or telescope has any lens at the C camera port)

Hi again,

No-one has any experience with the MDC-A Relay Lens? Is it any useful for adapting a DSLR?

I've googled for it (for sure you've done it deeper) and found this short article in Spanish:

Hi. The Nikon MDC works as a high quality (10x) adapter between a c-mount and a dslr. I think it was originally intended to work with the Nikon CP5000 (using other Nikon adapters) around year 2000.

I have been using it for 11 years with Leica Plan Achro objectives (1.5, 2 and 3x) and can say it is magnificent. My version does not have the "-A" To get good results, you would need a particular arrangement of sensor and DSLR lens to get a good result. Not so sure of the particular c-mount requirements. The picture shows the one I got working.

An APC sensor will avoid vignetting. I learned on this forum that the entrance pupil of the camera lens was key. For Canon, the 50mm 1.4 hits the sweet spot. I found that by bringing my rig to a lens rental store. This post discusses the issue. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... highlight=
