[Edit Feb 7 2017: The above version is a stack made from jpgs. Today I add here a punchier version stacked from RAW files that had been batch-converted to tiffs.]

Orchids have fused anthers and pistils; the combined organ is called the "column". In this Cattleya quadricolor from Colombia, the highly specialised pollen apparatus is hidden under the creamy white anther cap at the tip of the column. Maybe when this flower is getting past its prime I will dissect it and post the anatomy, which is surprisingly complex.

I bet there are UV nectar guides on this flower in the yellow areas....

This is done with an Olympus 60mm macro and in-camera focus bracketing. There are no vibrations whatsoever since the camera is mirrorless and shutterless. [Edit: Picture above was taken at 1x.]

That is a beauty. I can see why people are so passionate about these flowers. Interesting information about the column.

Thanks Mark. The column would be a great subject to dissect and photograph, but it looks like I won't have time for it now. Next time.

Beautiful series. If you ever get a chance to do the dissection, I'd love to see it!
