Cyanobacteria

Post by hkv »

I have a water sample that used to thrive with life. Water flies, Ostracods, aquatic larvae etc. I missed plants and algae so I added a few drops of plant fertilizer. Very interesting results.. After a week all "animals" were dead. Plants and algae started to grow. Rapidly. First all sorts of algae, but lately also cyanobacteria (I think). Now it looks like a dark green sludge.

I witnessed a very interesting behavior of Cyanobacteria. On several occasions I noticed that they had formed a loop. I wondered how on earth they did that and managed to watch a loop in forming. Even though they were squeezed between the slide and the cover glass they managed to cross it´s own body and then rotate the first simple loop, forming a spiral and more complex loops. This happened over and over again. I do not know what is the reason for this. Anyhow, I found it worth documenting through the photos.

Unfortunately, the beautiful Diatom swam away before the final loop was done.
