Old books

Post by Beatsy »

I dunno about you lot, but I love these old books! I just found this little gem in a second hand book shop for a mere £2. Exactly the kind of specialised, microscopy-related subject I always look out for. Yes, you have to wade through stodgy prose, and given the age (this one was published in 1888) some content is often wrong. But, to adopt the phrasing of the time, 'I find these publications hark back to a genteel age of pure curiosity and wonder and I take great pleasure investigating and emulating the worthy practices contained therein'.

I like that mouldy old book smell too :)

The best one I found is "Microscopic Life in Sphagnum Moss". Available new, but quite expensive for the size (sort of a thick pamphlet more than a book). I found mine in a second hand book store for 50p! It really is a brilliant little book though. What I like most about it is that on several pages it mentions "scientists don'y yet know..." and details things that still aren't understood.
