Well the first one is a Skipper (Lepidoptera) and a fly of some kind. Sorry, that is about as far as my knowledge of these critters goes. Like that Skipper by the way. :)

The fly is one of the picture winged flies, Tephritidae. A book is the best way to quickly narrow down identifications to order and family, and sometimes further. But pretty often you will need other sources to get it to species.
In case you are not familiar with it, you should check out Bugguide online. It is at times not easy to use, but it does help if you at least have an identification to family. Another is to just do a Google image search for the family.
