DYI lighting

Post by sbw123 »

I'm currently using a 100mm macro lens and a flash with an after market, square, nylon diffuser. This provides adequate lighting for the majority of my macro shots/attempts. The flash, however, is shorter than the lens barrel, so on some occasions, I'm not getting enough light "on top of" or
"to" the subject.

I'm thinking of placing a cylinder with a shiny inside - like a Pringles can - on the front of my flash, and then using some sort of contraption to get the light to "go down" on the subject.

Has anyone had any luck using this technique? Why or why not would this work?

Finally, if anyone has had it work, can you send a picture of your set up so i can see it "in action?"

Thank you.

Welcome Steve!

There may well be a photographer in Pringles' marketing depatment who decided to give away a light tube with every pack :?:

Our go-to thread for illustration of alternatives is http://orionmystery.blogspot.co.uk/2010 ... -rigs.html though - a bendy piece of white plastic stationery folder, does a pretty good job.

One thing I forgot to mention, my flash will stay in the hot shoe, so I the DYI fixes where the flash is at the front of the lens will not work.

You might find it worth scrolling through this long thread on Talk Photography. Lots of weird and wonderful examples there of home made light guides and diffusers. This post uses a Pringles tube, though flavour is not specified
