ID help, scale insects?

Post by lauriek »

I've thought things were scale insects before and been wrong, so I'm not at all sure about these.

From a close look at these leaves, even with a small loupe, these appear to be like little tiny white grubs. Closer up as photographed here, not so much, the little brown things look like scale insects, but each of the white things seems to have one of those at the 'head' of it.

What are these, and what is the white stuff?

Any thoughts appreciated!

Note these were quick and dirty stacks for ID purposes rather than an attempt at art! ;)

Hi,

Yes, they are scale insects. The white stuff are their wax secretions; sometimes there will be honeydew as well http://www7.inra.fr/hyppz/DESSINS/8032068.gif

Nice one, thanks man! I thought the white stuff looked more like it was a sort of extrusion than the actual insect itself!
