I have been asked to photograph a dinosaur bone for a friend so he can send the photos to a university to have it identified.
The bone is approx 5mm long and 2mm round at its thickest.
Question is would a 105 Nikon with a Raynox 250 be suitable for this size subject.

If you have an APS-C camera, and your lens goes to 1:1 (both AF versions will), then I don't see a problem. The Raynox may help but I doubt it would swing the answer.
If you can stack a few images, I suspect thet the image you can produce will be more than good enough for identification. It sounds like a really harsh crop from the frame at 1:1, but your sensor will be a few thousand pixels wide, and none of the images put on this forum are here at more than 1024.
The lighting will be more important, to bring out the salient details.
