Rotifer in an egg

Post by ralfwagner »

Hello,

recently I found this egg of a rotifer:

In the lower half of the picture you can see the foot and in the middle the mastax.
The mastax is already working, as you can see in the following video:

http://home.arcor.de/dr.ralf.wagner/Bil ... 5-divx.avi

(In case the Windows MediaPlayer does not play the video, please download the divx video codec from here
http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/
and install the codec. Then it will work.)

My friends from the German forum determined the rotifer as Lepadella patella (many thanks to Dr. M. Kreutz and bernhardinho). Here are two fotos of the adult species, that I found also in that water-droplet.

The foot of the adult species is very similar to that of the egg, I think.

Have fun!

Hi Ralf,

I am really looking forward to seeing your video but I'm having a problem connecting to the movie page. Is the link correct?

Hi Tom,

the link is working. No mistakes. The internet is sometimes a mysterious matter.

To shorten things up: please give me your email and I will send you the video by email attachment.

Hi again Ralf,

I can now access your images and movie. Very cool! Thank you.

I made a hasty webpage of DivX movies of a similar rotifer hatching taken with a Canon S3 IS camera and a Meiji microscope at 1000x brightfield.

Soon I will also post .mp4 movies for Macs but have to run out the door now.

Good observing to you in the meantime.

Tom
