Finally I got around to installing a new metal gear in my damaged Nikon Labophot 1 type focus block. Big thanks to Lothar (aka lothman) for supplying me with a new metal gear. He was even kind enough to machine the gear for the 3mm shaft, what a guy!

I am told this type of block was made for industrial applications. I own another similar block that is labeled as an Optem focus block and came with a heavy duty dovetail installed to mount on a Optem microscope.

This is the new Lothar supplied metal gear next to the old plastic nikon gear. The nikon gear failure was a split that would cause the fine focus to skip.

New metal gear installed with plastic knobs alongside. The new gear, installed using Loctite, is as smooth as silk! Thanks again Lothar, I owe you one!

Thanks guys for all your input on this problem.
I own two Nikon Optiphot 2.
I hope I never have a problem with the fine focus gear but its nice to have options for repair if I do.
