Animation of 105mm macro lens optics

Post by Chris S. »

Photographer Pierre Toscani has made an excellent animation of the optics of micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 AF-S VR. For those not accustomed to Nikon-speak, this is the current version of the Nikon 105mm macro lens.

In viewing the animation, one can gain understanding of several key concepts common to macro lenses: Shortening of focal length with close focus, change in effective f/stop with close focus, how the entrance and exit pupils move during focus, and how the lens elements move during focus.

(This said, I have not attempted to verify Toscani's data.)

That's a fascinating site! It's well worth looking around it to see the other lenses he considers, including zooms, fisheyes and underwater applications.

Absolutely agreed. For those who read French, here is a link that leads to much of it: http://www.pierretoscani.com/annexe.html .

Pierre Toscani has translated some of his articles into English: http://www.pierretoscani.com/annexeGB.html

And for the rest of the articles, Google Translate does an impressive job: https://translate.google.com/translate? ... t=&act=url
