Barkalez project, automated rail

Post by Charles Krebs »

We have a new member, Fernando (forum name "Barkalez").

One of his initial posts was placed in the "Beginners Macro" section, and I think it really should have been posted here in the "Equipment" section.

( http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... hp?t=27652 )

In this post he presents a project he wishes to start that I thought would be of great interest to many here.

One thing he referenced is a very modestly priced, motorized, lead-screw driven rail that looked (to me) very interesting. Since I'm still stacking with my thumb and index finger ( ) I didn't reply since I really have no experience with automated rails. But this piece looked like it has great potential, so I was surprised that no one responded (probably got lost in the Beginners Macro section). So what say the "gear-heads". Could this be a good base for an Arduino controlled stacking set-up?

It is possible, shipping to your destination is expensive for 2nd item.

Either way, the price seems attractive, especially if you are trying to put together a system on a really tight budget.

Naturally, nothing is a "bargain" if it does not perform the intended task well.

I agree, Charlie, and moved Fernando's post as you suggest.

While I don't consider myself a gear-head, I probably am the very definition of one. In responding to Fernando, I gave my impression of this motorized translation stage. In short, I suspect it lacks the precision for magnifications greater than 7x. Of course, whether this is true or not could only be determined by testing.

Edited to change "2x" to "7x"

I believe that this rail has already been used by one of our Members.
