Aspidisca

Post by Wim van Egmond »

Some images from a couple of weeks ago I had a marine sample of diatoms scraped from the rocks and it was full of ciliates. I tried to use the higher magnifications.

The top (I think a Diophrys) was done with a 40X planapo. The second (Aspidisca) and third with a 63X planapo, the third a bit cropped.

The bottom 2 were made with a 100X planachromat. Aachromats are often regarded as inferior but with the highest magnification they give more contrast than the planapos. I removed the color fringe in lightroom. The bottom 2 are stacks. The 3D effect is not that pronounced but it is still fun to see 3D with such magnification.

Stunning photos, nice contrast and lots details!

Wim: Is this real DIC or your DIY DIC ? http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/ind ... iydic.html If neither, Would you please provide some details of filter / set-up? Thank you!

I found circular filter stops difficult to DIY for >= 60x objectives .

In my hands, my DIY oblique+darkfield filter does not seem to perform this well at >60x (even with help of flash and EtOH). I have not tried them but doubt stacking / sharpening can make my image 1/4 as good as yours. Please kindly comment. Thanks again.

Thanks friends.

Zzffnn, it was done with real DIC. The Diydic oblique rheinberg filters don't work well with the highest magnifications.

Spectacular photos and a great find. I love Aspidisca and its cousins (just look at my site name). So this was just a biofilm from the rocks, not mud?
